Sunnyside is best known for Sunnyside Gardens, a planned community laid out in the 1920s around shared garden courtyards instead of the usual back lots. It was an experiment in how city housing could feel, and it worked well enough that the area is now a designated New York City historic district.
The rest of the neighborhood runs along Queens Boulevard and Greenpoint Avenue, with the elevated 7 train threading overhead. It is dense, diverse and endlessly walkable, packed with small family-run storefronts — the kind of place where people take food seriously and are picky about where dinner comes from.
